Survival

Last Friday I survived a a round of layoffs at work that saw a lot of good people lose their jobs because of the incompetence of five County Commissioners. They wasted millions on stupid decisions that most children wouldn't make. My department was reduced to two people and the workload ahead of us is staggering. On top of that they are now talking about a cut in pay for all employees. So I hope that whatever the new President has in mind to fix the economy, he gets off his but and gets to it because the lines of the unemployed keep getting longer.

Awaiting a Possible Bad Day

I might be getting laid off from work in a few days. I've been laid off before, twice actually, but in those days it was just me. I didn't have anyone depending on me and I didn't have the kind of responsibilities that I have now. I gotta be honest with you I'm scared, the last time I got laid off was right before 9/11 so finding a new job was hard and I had to take a big pay cut to get the job I got. The economy now is almost as bad as it was then and before things get better I think it will be much worse. I'm not as young as I was then and my skill set is a lot more specialized now so I don't have as wide a group of options available to me.

Newfound Televised Treasures

When I first met my wife I didn't watch a lot of documentary television I was more of drama and comedy guy, she however loved it. But during our courtship, engagement and now marriage I've been exposed to some really good television that I normally wouldn't have watched. My most recent find was a show on the History channel called Cities of the Underworld. I'm fascinated by what they show not only ancient civilizations hidden underground but even more recent subterranean wonders. The production values are high and the host is engaging and fun to watch. My DVR is currently filled with episodes based on everything from the Freemasons, London's Underground, and Mafia Tunnels. So if you haven't given it a chance yet it's definitely worth watching.

Out of the Starters Block

So this is my first post of my new blog, I've failed miserably with my previous two attempts and hesitated before starting a third one. It isn't that I don't always have something to say it's just that I don't think anyone cares what I think. There are hundreds of these things out there and who is reading them. Why would anyone anywhere care what I think about the last book I read or movie I watched. Why would anyone care what I thought of the new President-Elect (I have high hopes for the guy by the way) or the current President being shown the door.

So why start another one at all? Why does anyone start one of these things? Is it the attention they crave or the loneliness they feel. I guess more than anything sometimes people just want a place to vent, a place to spout crackpot ideas or rip their heart asunder without the threat of everyone they know now knowing their deepest pain. Maybe it's the anonymity that a blog gives you, the chance to say what you really think without worrying about it hurting anyone or worse having what you say coming back to hurt you.

So that's what I'll try to do here and I'll try above all to be honest not just with whoever reads this mess if anyone but mostly with myself. That may be the toughest thing of all.
